The International Council on Archives (ICA), through the Section on Sport Archives (SPO), aims to make governments and the public aware of the need to preserve and conserve archives belonging to all the individuals, public and private institutions, associations and other organisations linked to the world of sport.
The ICA’s activities, through ICA / SPO, are intended to raise awareness in society of the need to organise, preserve, disseminate and facilitate access to documentation and information produced by associations, clubs, federations, sports organisations and athletes, since they play a fundamental role in configuring the personal and collective memory of the world of sport and of society itself.
The complex management of the world of sport has many links with other professionals, such as those involved in health, journalism and the media, history, archive studies, political science, legislation, economics, philosophy, the sciences of physical activity, and sports and engineering, among other fields.
With a view to achieving the above aims, the ICA / SPO, the Diputació de Girona, the Girona City Council and the Generalitat de Catalunya are promoting a biennial seminar on sport archives in Girona.
The mission of the Section on Sport Archives (SPO) of the International Council on Sport Archives is to promote the preservation of sport-related archives around the world and to raise awareness among governments and the general public of the need to preserve and conserve the archives of all individuals, public and private institutions, associations and organisations involved in sport.
These two sections, ICA/SPO and ICA/SAHR, of the International Council on Archives, propose that the main objective of the III International Seminar on Sports Archives should be to raise awareness of the role of documents held in archives linked to sport and human rights in order to provide this primary source of information during any activity that defends human rights, as well as in courts of law and in the application of social justice.
One of the ways to achieve this is to organise seminars on sport archives in order to make society aware of the importance of preserving this documentation and ensuring that it is accessible to both public and private institutions around the world.
Racism, sexism, abuse, gender violence, deceit, hate crimes and many other actions that affect people's rights can also be identified through the documents that make up the archives linked to the world of sport. At the same time, there are documents that refer to the positive development of these rights, such as integration and social cohesion, education, equality and democracy.
The Section on Archives and Human Rights of the International Council on Archives strives for the preservation of archives documenting human rights violations and disseminates information on the importance of archives in the defence of human rights.
